We just had our 43 national day and our Singapore Olympic Table Tennis Team (some say the China "B" team) have ended Singapore's wait for an Olympic medal after 48 years. It is truly time to feel proud.
We should indeed be proud our country is doing so well that our sisters and women do not need to go overseas to work as maids.
We should also be proud that our elderly also do not need to go overseas to work too but instead can stay here in Singapore to pick up used cans, sell tissues or work at food courts in their golden years
I could go on and on about what other things we can proud about but my teachers used to tell me not to be too proud so i should stop here.
Whats my point?:
The measure of the success of a society is not how the young and able thrive, but how it takes care of the old and weak. (Flying XQ August 2008)

Nice entry on misplaced social priorities.
You seem to have somewhat mellowed though, given your ability to deliver more hard-hitting social commentary in the past.
Agree with your point that more can and should be done for our elderly to have a life of dignity. If only some of the monies invested overseas were used to help our elderly.

hey beng, hardhitting? nah... the only thing i hit hard is probably my keyboard and nothing else...
Just feel troubled when i see that competition for the can-collection business at coffee shops/hawker/food courts is getting more and more aggressive.
Folks are asking for the cans before you leave the table or even before you finish the drink....
hey anonymous or is it patriot,
anyway, this has got nothing to do with dignity.
Relying on handouts is no dignified means of living either.....
